Antilip ® Advance is a dietary food supplement that contains Monacolin K, polyglucosamine, phytosterols, chromium picolinate, Vitamin C and Vitamin B6. These components all act synergically on lipid and glucid metabolism.

Dyslipidemia plays a central role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. When the total level of cholesterol (LDL and HDL) is too high, this condition is called hypercholesterolemia (also known as high cholesterol).

The desirable cholesterol levels are the following:

total cholesterol: up to 200 mg/dl;

LDL cholesterol: up to 100 mg/dl;

HDL cholesterol: not below 50 mg/dl.

High cholesterol (especially high LDL cholesterol) is an independent risk factor for the development of coronary disorders. Besides, high levels of triglycerides (>150 mg/dl) can be an independent risk factor for coronary arteries, especially in association with low HDL cholesterol. Lipid levels in the blood can be monitored and managed with pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches depending on the cardiovascular risk, both as a prevention and as an active treatment.

Nutraceuticals can be used alone or in combination with drug therapy; they can positively impact health and well-being as well as prevent and treat disorders.

Monacolin K is a product of the fermentation of rice with the fungus Monascus Purpureus. Its structure is similar to that of lovastatin and, just like statins, it inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, which is a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. Therefore Monacolin K directly lowers lipids and helps maintain normal levels of cholesterol in the blood. According to estimates, taking 10 mg per day of Monacolin K is enough to reduce and maintain healthy cholesterol levels. The structural similarity with lovastatin causes muscular and skeletal side effects the seriousness of which is far lower than with other statins.

Polyglucosamine is a natural indigestible fiber made up of a variable sequence of units of glucosamine and acetyl-glucosamine. It comes from the shell of sea crustaceans, which can bind to oxidised lipids within the intestine. It therefore helps eliminate fat acids through the feces and reduces the quantity of lipids absorbed from food. It also binds to bile acids secreted in the intestine, dramatically decreases their absorption and reduces the quantity of liver cholesterol used in the production of bile acids.

Phytosterols are lipophilic compounds whose structure is similar to that of cholesterol; they are extracted from Brassica campestris. They replace cholesterol inside the intestine by taking the place of lipid micelles; being scarcely absorbed, they are eliminated through the feces with cholesterol in the form of insoluble crystals. They exhibit affinity for mixed micelles made of triglycerides, bile salts and food and bile cholesterol. The reduction in the absorption of cholesterol stimulates the liver LDL uptake and helps reduce fat concentration in the plasma. Besides, unlike cholesterol, phytosterols have no atheromatous effect.

Chromium picolinate is a micronutrient that naturally occurs in the human body. It is essential for lipid, carbohydrate and protein metabolism. It strengthens and supports insulin activity and helps regulate glucose levels by improving glucose tolerance. Several studies have shown that chromium picolinate has better absorption and better bioavailability than other chromium-based compounds. Chromium also helps maintain normal glucose levels and supports physiological metabolism of macronutrients. A recent review has analysed the results of 15 clinical trials in which 1,505 diabetic patients were treated with chromium picolinate. The review assessed its efficacy in glucose control: in all studies at least one of the parameters for diabetes control, including dyslipidemia and cholesterol levels in the blood, has improved. Six studies reported a significant improvement in fasting as well as post-prandial glucose levels compared with initial values. Both fasting and post-prandial insulin levels improved as well; glycated hemoglobin significantly decreased. All studies showed high tolerability and safety profile of chromium picolinate as well as a high therapeutic value in managing high cholesterol and high blood sugar in diabetic patients. Exogenous food supplements of chromium picolinate is an efficacious way to keep blood sugar under control and at the same time manage dyslipidemia.

The presence of all these elements in a single food supplement allows patients to take a combination of active principles which act in synergy and potentiate each other’s effect in reducing cholesterol levels in the blood.
