Melura is a dietary food supplement that contains dried extract of pomegranate and D-Mannose. Each sachet contains 1.5 g of D-Mannose.
UTIs (urinary trait infections) are a frequent condition which affects many women around the world. Almost 50% of women suffer from UTI at least once in their life.
Infections frequently recur in the following months in spite of proper use of antibiotics.
UTIs occur when uropathogenic bacteria (often E. coli) settle in the periurethral mucosa and climb through the urethra up to the bladder.
Acute (uncomplicated) cystitis is considered to be a benign condition with rapid resolution even without treatment. Nonetheless, because of disabling urologic symptoms such as dysuria, frequent urination, urinary urgency and pelvic pain, antibiotics are often prescribed. Opting for the antibiotic therapy is becoming harder and harder because of the increasing antimicrobial resistance of uropathogenic bacteria in several geographic areas.
This issue becomes even more urgent when one considers recurrent UTIs (defined as two infections in 6 months or 3 or more infections in one year) for which adopting a long-term antibiotic prophylaxis is still very controversial.
Hence the need for alternative therapies, perhaps based on nutraceuticals.
D-mannose is an isomer of glucose which, unlike the latter, is not metabolised after intake and is thus excreted unchanged through the kidneys.
D-mannose binds E. coli in the bladder and prevents it from adhering to the walls of the bladder. Thus bacteria cannot settle and are excreted with the urine.
The pomegranate-extracted polyphenolic complex is especially rich in punicalagin, ellagitannins and ellagic acid and has several properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.
The pomegranate-extracted polyphenolic complex also exerts an essential antibacterial action against E.coli, which is the main responsible for cystitis. The polyphenolic complex can inhibit the formation of E.coli’s biofilm and interferes with its proliferation. The polyphenols break down the biofilm and the bacteria remain suspended in the urine and are then excreted during urination.
Melura is an innovative food supplement derived from Ecupharma’s R&D and is composed of:
High-dosage D-mannose (1500 mg per sachet)
Pomegranate-extracted polyphenolic complex (Punica Granatum)
Thanks to the synergy of its components, Melura prevents recurring cystitis in both men and women.
Using Melura can help reduce the intake of antibiotics, thus preventing resistance to antibiotics.
