Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder characterised by an acute(rapid) or insidious (over a period of years) onset. It often manifests at an early age and affects 1% of the population. In Italy an estimate of 300,000 people suffer from this disorder.
People with schizophrenia have very distressed thoughts, emotions and behaviours and have trouble assessing and perceiving their reality. This affects their social life as well as their family and work environment.
Schizophrenia requires long-term treatment. The variety of its symptoms and individual characteristics can sometimes make it hard to diagnose at an early stage.
The primary treatment of schizophrenia involves the use of antipsychotics – often associated with social and psychological support.
