Surprise! From the Greek verb “epilambanein”, epilepsy means “catch by surprise, catch off guard”.
This name reflects the way body and brain are “caught” by a seizure, which is caused by a spontaneous excess of electric activity.
The term epilepsy refers to several different pathological conditions.
An anomalous discharge in the brain cells may trigger sensations or actions which manifest regardless of the person’s will and in different ways depending on the brain areas involved.
The symptoms of a seizure depend on the area of the brain where the discharge has occurred as well as how it is spreading.
Patients may feel, smell, hear, taste and even see things, or have a jerking part of their body, or experience a whole-body stiffening or shaking. This may be accompanied by losing touch with reality, completely or partially, or perceiving the surroundings as altered or absent.
A single seizure does not necessarily mean epilepsy. It may happen accidentally, because of a temporary dysfunction.
To be epileptic, seizures should occur spontaneously as a consequence of a chronic excessive brain excitability, particularly in the cortex.
Epilepsy may develop at any age, although in 80% of the cases seizures start before patients are 20, during childhood or adolescence. Another peak in seizures appears during the old age.
Approximately 0.5%-0.8% of the population is impacted by epilepsy, i.e. about 300,000 Italians with 25,000 new cases each year.
Ecupharma aims to relieve or eliminate seizures and offers solutions for the long-term treatment of epilepsy, both for monotherapy and polytherapy.
